I already have a psychiatrist, can I still receive therapy?
Medication and therapy are complementary services and often produce maximum results when used in conjunction with each other. Your therapist may communicate with your psychiatrist, with your consent, to keep the other informed of your progress. Insurance plans will reimburse for both these services.
How do I know if I need therapy?
If you are experiencing any symptoms that are affecting your quality of life you may be a good candidate for therapy. Feeling very anxious when leaving the house, or feeling too sad to complete acitivities that you used to are indications that you may be experiencing anxiety or depression. Other indications that therapy may be beneficial include having difficulties in relationships with others, a sudden drop in grades at school, mood swings or thoughts of hurting yourself. Therapy is effective for a variety of concerns. Call for a free consultation to get recommendations for your specific concerns.
Can my family be involved?
There are many instances where it is helpful to have family members involved in therapy with you, depending on the stressors that prompted you to seek therapy. Usually you will attend the intake session and discuss your concerns with your therapist. Together you will decide whether to involve family members and whether individual therapy or family therapy is indicated.
How long does treatment last?
Therapy can take varying amounts of time, depending on your presenting issues. Many issues can be resolved in 8-10 sessions, while other problems can take longer. Most insurance companies authorize 8 initial sessions and more sessions are requested as needed. Your therapist can advise you on length of treatment following your initial appointment.
Is what I say in therapy kept confidential?
Therapists are bound to a confidentiality agreement with their clients. This means that what is said in session stays between the client and the therapist. However there are limits to confidentiality and certain circumstances are required to be reported by law. These include disclosures of child abuse, threats to harm another individual and threats to harm self.
